Rivers State – The House of Representatives ended its plenary session on Wednesday without addressing the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.
Despite widespread expectations that lawmakers would deliberate on the issue, the session concluded without any mention of the emergency rule. However, prior to the plenary, two female lawmakers—Blessing Amadi from Rivers State and Marie Ebikake—were involved in a heated argument over the matter.
Other Key Discussions at the Plenary
Instead of discussing the state of emergency, the House focused on investigating the Federal Government’s conditional cash transfer program.
Honourable Abass Adigun, who raised the motion, highlighted issues in the payment process. He noted that while beneficiaries were promised N50,000 for three months starting in August 2024, some received payments late, while others had not been paid at all. The National Cash Transfer Office has yet to address these inconsistencies.
Meanwhile, the Senate has deferred its motion on the state of emergency, adding to the ongoing political tensions surrounding the situation in Rivers State.
