The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to exempt members of the Armed Forces from tollgate fees and parking charges at airports across Nigeria.
In a motion of urgent public importance, Alhaji Abdulsamad Dasuki, representing the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, highlighted the need for preferential treatment for members of the Armed Forces and senior citizens at public transport stations, recognizing their sacrifices for the nation.
Alhaji Dasuki emphasized the importance of honoring those who voluntarily serve under the national flag, noting the dangers they face and the ultimate sacrifices made by many. He argued that it is a mark of gratitude and respect to exempt these individuals from airport fees, which would also encourage fellow citizens to acknowledge their service.
The House expressed concern that requiring members of the Armed Forces to pay access fees at airports would be a disservice to their commitment and sacrifices.
Upon adopting the motion, the House directed the House Committee on Aviation to ensure compliance with this directive.
This development follows an announcement by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, stating that the Federal Executive Council has approved the cancellation of all airport access payment exemptions for VIPs due to significant revenue losses for the Federal Government.
