ABUJA , NIGERIA — The Nigerian Red Cross Society has announced the launch of Phase 2 of its flagship Saving Lives and Livelihoods project, a $1.5 billion initiative designed to bolster vaccine availability and strengthen healthcare systems across 10 Nigerian states.
The announcement was made by the Society’s President, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, during a World Red Cross Day event held in Abuja. The project is expected to benefit more than 65 million Nigerians and will build on the successes of Phase 1, which concluded in 2023.
Adeaga emphasized the initiative’s vital role in expanding access to life-saving vaccines and reinforcing Nigeria’s public health infrastructure. The second phase is set to commence in the second quarter of 2025 and is being implemented in partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control (Africa CDC) and the Mastercard Foundation.
In his remarks, Adeaga also praised the dedication of Red Cross volunteers, particularly their involvement in ongoing flood response operations across seven states.
The World Red Cross Day celebration featured a roadshow, a blood donation campaign, and drew participation from international partners, including the British Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and delegations from Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
This year’s theme, “On the Side of Humanity,” underscored the enduring commitment of humanitarian workers who continue to deliver hope and relief to vulnerable communities.
