A staff member of Radio Nigeria, Pyramid FM, Mukhtar Dahiru, has been remanded in a correctional facility by a Kano Magistrate Court for alleged criminal conspiracy, defamation, and insult. The charges were brought forward by Anas Abba Dala, a former aide to the ex-governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje. Dahiru’s actions were found to be in violation of sections 97, 391, and 115 of the penal code.
Dala disclosed that the legal action stemmed from a series of defamatory posts made by Dahiru on social media, where he accused Dala of engaging in adultery, neglecting his elderly mother, and insulting Vice President Kashim Shettima. Dahiru also alleged that Dala impregnated a woman, further escalating the situation.
In response to widespread criticism, Dala clarified that the case was a personal legal matter and not an official action by the Kano State government. He emphasized that the lawsuit was aimed at restoring his reputation, which he claimed had been severely damaged by Dahiru’s false accusations.
“This is not a government lawsuit,” Dala explained. “I took Dahiru to court because he used his social media platform to defame me, accusing me of adultery and spreading numerous baseless lies, including that I abandoned my 85-year-old mother to hawk on the streets. I have evidence to support all my claims.”
Dala stated that the case was thoroughly investigated by the police, who subsequently advised that it be taken to court. Dahiru, who reportedly attempted to evade arrest, was later apprehended by the authorities. His legal team sought bail, but the matter is ongoing.
The case has drawn attention, with some accusing the state government of jailing a journalist. However, Dala insists it is purely a personal matter unrelated to his official role within the government.
