President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to adopt better energy management practices as a way to reduce electricity expenses.
“It’s not a bad thing to learn how to manage. Control your electricity bill, switch off the light, and let’s embrace good management habits,” Tinubu stated on Monday during a media chat at his Bourdillon residence in the upscale Ikoyi area of Lagos State.
The President, a key figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), also reiterated his stance against government-imposed price control. “I don’t believe in price control; instead, we will work hard to ensure the market is adequately supplied,” he said.
Since Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, the cost of energy has significantly increased, driven by the removal of petrol subsidies and a hike in electricity tariffs. Petrol prices surged from under ₦200 per litre to over ₦1,100 in various parts of the country, while the naira’s exchange rate plummeted from around ₦700/$1 to approximately ₦1,600/$1.
On April 3, 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission raised tariffs for Band A customers, with the rate jumping from ₦66 per kilowatt-hour to ₦225 per kilowatt-hour. This abrupt increase drew widespread criticism, especially as many Nigerians grapple with heightened economic challenges.

Food and commodity prices have also skyrocketed, plunging citizens into what is arguably the worst cost-of-living crisis since Nigeria’s independence over 60 years ago. Despite these hardships, Tinubu insists that his reforms are vital to setting the nation on a sustainable path to prosperity.
