Protesters Break Through Police Lines, Storm Kenya Parliament

Protesters breached police lines and forcefully entered Kenya’s parliament complex, sparking chaos and prompting a swift response from security forces. Live footage broadcasted on local television showed smoke emanating from a section of the parliament building, indicating a fire had broken out.

Reports from the scene indicated clashes between demonstrators and police resulted in injuries, with authorities resorting to firing rounds to disperse the crowds. The Kenya Human Rights Commission reported witnessing four protesters being shot, and expressed concern over unconfirmed reports of a fatality.

In response to the escalating situation, the Commission condemned the use of force by authorities, describing it as a serious infringement on human rights. Images circulated also depicted a police vehicle ablaze in close proximity to the parliament premises.

The unrest extended beyond Nairobi, with protests erupting in various cities and towns across the country. These demonstrations led to widespread disruption, including the closure of businesses and a halt in transportation services.

The protests coincided with a contentious finance bill passing through parliament, which introduced unpopular tax measures. Youth-led demonstrators vehemently opposed these tax hikes and called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to reject the proposed legislation. Although the government has amended some of the most contentious provisions, it defended the need for new taxes to finance government spending programs and alleviate the national debt burden.
