Tope Temokun, a lawyer and human rights activist, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide address to #EndBadGovernance protesters and Nigerians, stating that the speech failed to address the grievances and struggles of the protesters.
In a statement in Akure, Temokun expressed disappointment that the President characterized the protest as the work of a few individuals with a political agenda, failing to acknowledge the genuine frustrations and challenges faced by the citizens.
Temokun highlighted that President Tinubu’s speech did not empathize with the pains of the protesters and instead portrayed the protests as a political scheme. He described the President’s statement as lacking sensitivity and responsibility towards the citizens who are grappling with severe hunger and hardship under the government’s administration.
Temokun emphasized that the President’s failure to directly address the citizens’ struggles and provide concrete solutions was a missed opportunity to connect with the genuine concerns of the protesting youths.
The activist criticized the President’s call for the protesters to suspend their strike and engage in dialogue without offering tangible relief measures or addressing pressing economic issues such as the cost of basic commodities.
Temokun concluded that the President’s speech was a failure, as it did not resonate with the anger and hunger of the citizens who are yearning for a better quality of life.
