Abuja, Nigeria — Prison Fellowship Nigeria (PFN) has called for the adoption of a restorative justice system as a vital reform for Nigeria’s criminal justice framework.
The call was made by PFN Executive Director, Dr. Jacob Tsado, during the opening of the Fellowship’s 2025 Prayer Week held at Four Square Church in Asokoro, Abuja.
Dr. Tsado explained that restorative justice emphasizes repairing the harm caused by crime through inclusive engagement rather than relying solely on punishment. He described it as a more humane, effective, and cost-efficient alternative to the traditional punitive system.
The Fellowship uses the national Prayer Week to mobilize churches, NGOs, and people of goodwill to remember inmates, victims of crime, their families, and workers within the criminal justice system. The event also raises awareness and offers prayers for those incarcerated and awaiting trial.
Deputy Vice Chairman of PFN’s Board, Yinka Oyewole, highlighted the organization’s contributions to correctional centres, including educational support and provision for the children of inmates. He urged the Federal Capital Territory Minister to partner with PFN to reduce crime in the FCT through professional, educational, and spiritual guidance.
Mr. Edose John, Director of Prison and Hospital Outreach at Four Square Gospel Church, commended government efforts in correctional centres, especially initiatives promoting education and skill acquisition.
PFN’s Deputy Executive Director, Dr. Elijah Ogunsanya, called on the government to prioritize inmates’ welfare and further support NGOs that implement effective inmate rehabilitation programmes.
