President Bola Tinubu welcomed Bassirou Faye, the President of Senegal, to the State House in Abuja on Thursday, marking Faye’s first official visit to Nigeria since assuming office as the democratically elected president of Senegal in April.
Bassirou Faye’s visit to Nigeria comes after his inauguration as the fifth democratically elected president of Senegal in April, following the presidential election held on March 24. This visit underscores the importance of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Senegal.
Before the presidential election, Bassirou Faye faced challenges, including detention alongside his political mentor, Ousmane Sanko, on accusations of various offences, including defamation. However, they were released from detention after an amnesty law was passed, enabling Faye to contest the election.
During the presidential poll, Bassirou Faye emerged victorious with 54 percent of the votes cast, defeating Amadou Ba, Senegal’s former prime minister. He succeeded Macky Sall, who had been in power since 2012, and was sworn in as the fifth president of Senegal on April 2.
President Tinubu, in his capacity as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was among the dignitaries who attended Faye’s inauguration in Senegal, reaffirming the regional cooperation and solidarity among West African countries.
