President Bola Tinubu has praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his performance and commitment to enforcing compliance in the nation’s capital.
Speaking during his first presidential media chat with senior journalists in Lagos on Monday, Tinubu described Wike as a “good man” and a “performing minister” whose efforts to enforce regulations and transform the FCT are commendable.
Addressing controversies surrounding Wike’s tenure, including the demolition of illegal structures, allegations of land grabbing, and revocation of land titles, Tinubu defended the minister’s actions. He emphasized the importance of compliance with regulations, which he said many Nigerians often neglect.
“Nyesom Wike is a good man, and he is a performing minister. Nigerians lack compliance, period!” Tinubu remarked. “We don’t pay our ground rents on time. We see compliance as inconveniences. I doff my hat for him.”
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, was appointed as the FCT Minister on August 16, 2023, after being screened and confirmed by the Nigerian Senate. During his screening, Wike assured the Senate and Nigerians that his inclusion in the cabinet would bring impactful results.
“Mr. President will not regret nominating me as a minister in his cabinet,” Wike confidently stated during his Senate appearance.
Since assuming office, Wike has implemented policies aimed at urban renewal and infrastructural development in the FCT. While his reforms have garnered praise for their boldness, they have also attracted criticism from some quarters. Tinubu’s endorsement underscores his administration’s confidence in Wike’s leadership and vision for the capital city.
