Nigeria: The Nigerian Presidency has downplayed a recent US federal court ruling ordering the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to release investigative files connected to President Bola Tinubu’s alleged drug involvement in the 1990s.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stated that the documents in question are decades old and contain no incriminating findings.
According to Onanuga, the reports by the FBI and DEA have been in the public domain for over 30 years, and there’s nothing new to reveal. The court’s decision, delivered on April 8, 2025, directs the FBI and DEA to search for and process non-exempt records related to Tinubu, as part of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by American transparency activist Aaron Greenspan.
The Presidency maintains that the ruling changes nothing about Tinubu’s legal or political standing, emphasizing that there’s no fresh evidence implicating the President in any criminal activity. Meanwhile, opposition voices, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, are demanding full disclosure and clarity on Tinubu’s past
