Liverpool, England — The 2025/26 Premier League season kicked off at Anfield under a cloud of controversy after Bournemouth striker, Antoine Semenyo, was subjected to racist abuse from a section of the crowd during the opening match.
In a statement on Friday night, the Premier League confirmed that referee Anthony Taylor halted the game in the first half after Semenyo reported the incident. The match was briefly paused in line with the league’s anti-discrimination protocol before play resumed.
“Tonight’s fixture between Liverpool and AFC Bournemouth was temporarily stopped following a report of discriminatory abuse directed at Antoine Semenyo. The matter will be fully investigated. Racism has no place in football or anywhere in society,” the league stated.
The Football Association (FA) also pledged to collaborate with officials, both clubs, and security agencies to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola later confirmed that the individual responsible had been identified.
Despite the unsettling episode, the 25-year-old Ghanaian international showcased remarkable resilience, netting two goals in the second half after Liverpool had established a 2–0 lead. His second strike, a stunning solo run from his own half, drew widespread acclaim.
Bournemouth captain Adam Smith commended his teammate’s courage, saying:
“I don’t know how Ant kept going after that. He was a bit shaken, but he showed incredible strength to deliver such a performance.”
The Premier League, FA, and the two clubs have since reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on discrimination and restated their commitment to eradicating racism from the sport.
