London, England — The Premier League has clarified the reasons behind the disallowed goal scored by Fulham’s Josh King during their recent match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
King appeared to give Fulham the lead in the 21st minute, but the goal was overturned following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
Referee Rob Jones was initially convinced to allow the goal but was prompted by VAR official Michael Salisbury to examine a challenge by Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz on Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah in the lead-up.
After reviewing the pitchside monitor, Jones ruled that Muniz made a “careless challenge” by stepping on Chalobah’s foot, resulting in the disallowance of the goal.
The Premier League’s official statement said: “After the VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision to allow the goal. The referee announced: ‘After review, Fulham number nine commits a careless challenge, stands on the foot of the Chelsea defender, therefore we disallow the goal and restart with a Chelsea free kick. There would be no further action.’”
Adding to Fulham’s frustration, Chelsea’s Joao Pedro scored a header shortly before halftime, giving the home side a 1-0 lead.
The disallowed goal and subsequent Chelsea lead proved decisive as Chelsea won the game 2-0.
