A midnight fire has engulfed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) station in Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State. The exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined, but reports indicate that a loud explosion was heard at the TCN station, which is situated behind the Mechanic Village in Birnin Kebbi.
The fire began around 12:30 a.m. and adds to a series of recent incidents affecting Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Notably, this fire occurred shortly after a similar incident on the Kainji/Jebba 330-kilovolt (KV) line, which led to the collapse of the national power grid, resulting in a nationwide power outage. According to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, this incident resulted in a loss of approximately 356.63 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation.
Investigations into the Birnin Kebbi TCN station fire are likely underway to determine the cause and extent of the damage, as the nation grapples with power infrastructure challenges.
