POWER blackout over Akwa Ibom state entered day three Friday with no sign of abatement as ‘earth fault’ and senior staff strike ground public power supply by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to residents in the state.
PHED’s announcement of the “earth fault” on Wednesday had compounded the Disco’s operational challenges posed by strike embarked upon by senior staff two days earlier, halting power supply to consumers ans disrupting businesses in Akwa Ibom.
According to a statement by PHED management, the power outage due to an “earth fault” affected Itu, Uyo, Eket and Ekim transmission stations.
“We are currently working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) maintenance crew to rectify the fault and restore supply as soon as repair work is completed,” the statement added.
On the strike action, Innocent Douglas, Deputy General Secretary, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Workers Companies, TCN, Benin Region, directed “Shutdown of PHED facilities in all its franchise states to give room for unbiased dialogue/negotiations due to unreconciled differences between the labour union and management of PHED.
“Based on this, we encourage staff of PHED to stay off offices except those required to man gates of regional and feeder offices. Anyone caught sabotaging their efforts would be treated as an enemy of workers.”
The developing has worsen hardship and anger among resident in Akwa Ibom who can’t afford alternative energy sources even as many wonder why the state which owns Ibom Power Plant, a power generating company suffers widespread epileptic electricity supply.
Ibom Power, said to supply about 100 Megawatts of electricity to the national grid is currently undergoing operational audit initiated by Governor Umo Eno who is also emplacing modalities for establishment of a state owned distribution company to maximise benefits of the Ibom Power for Akwa Ibom state.
