Pope Francis Delivers Aid to Remote Papua New Guinea Village

Pope Francis made a historic journey on Sunday to one of the most remote corners of the world, traveling deep into the jungle of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to meet local Catholics and provide crucial medical and humanitarian supplies.

The 87-year-old pontiff arrived in Vanimo, a remote township with a population of about 12,000, located in the northwestern region of PNG’s main island. He traveled 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) aboard a Royal Australian Air Force C-130 cargo plane, bringing with him much-needed aid to a region where electricity and running water are scarce.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis delivered hundreds of kilograms of essential supplies, including medicines, clothing, toys, and musical instruments for local schoolchildren. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni highlighted the importance of the visit, which is part of the pope’s 12-day, four-nation tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania, marking the longest trip of his papacy.

Invited by missionaries from the Catholic Institute of the Incarnate Word, a group originating from Argentina, the pope addressed a crowd of around 20,000—far surpassing Vanimo’s population. In his speech, he commended the missionaries and local Catholics for their unwavering dedication to serving the region.

Reverend Tomas Ravaioli, one of the missionaries, expressed his amazement at the pope’s visit, calling it the fulfillment of a long-held promise. “At his age, he is making an enormous effort,” Ravaioli said.

Papua New Guinea, known for its rugged landscapes of mountains, rivers, and dense jungle, is home to over 800 languages and numerous indigenous tribes, including uncontacted groups. Pope Francis was warmly welcomed with a traditional dance by locals wearing elaborate feathered headdresses and straw skirts, while some men donned the “koteka,” a traditional gourd covering.

The pope’s visit to Vanimo underscores his commitment to reaching the most isolated and underserved communities in his mission of pastoral care.
