The Delta State Police Command has rescued over twenty victims of human trafficking in the Ughelli area of the state.
The Command’s Spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, announced this on Thursday in Asaba. According to SP Edafe, the command received reliable information about a woman named Chinyere, who specializes in trafficking young women from the South-East to Ughelli, Delta State, for prostitution.
Edafe revealed in a statement that the victims were misled into believing they were coming to work as salesgirls in a restaurant. “Chinyere deceives girls from the East, promising them jobs as salesgirls in Delta. Upon arrival in Ughelli, they are forced into prostitution. She was exposed when she brought three girls, including a 16-year-old, to Ughelli, who refused to comply and reported to the police,” Edafe explained.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, directed the DPO, Ekpan CSP Aliyu Shaba, to gather intelligence and apprehend the suspect. Edafe added that Chinyere had deceived the victims and their parents in Abia State with the promise of a job in a bar with a monthly salary of N30,000.
Upon their arrival in Ughelli, the victims found other teenagers already engaged in prostitution. A combined team of surveillance units raided the ‘Big Dafe Hotel’ on Ughelli-Patani Road, arresting Chioma Edafe, who runs the hotel, along with 35 others, including 23 teenagers.
A manhunt for the main suspect, Chinyere, is ongoing.
