Police Rescue Suspected Ritualist from Lynching in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command on anti-riot duty intervened to rescue a suspected witch doctor from being lynched by an angry mob in the Itak communities of Ikono Local Government Area. The suspect, identified as Michael Edet Effa, was alleged to be behind a series of ritual killings in the area.

Local residents reported that following numerous unexplained deaths in the community, angry youths stormed Effa’s shrine. Incriminating items discovered at the shrine sparked outrage among the residents.

“We have experienced several untimely and mysterious deaths, including those of young people, which have shocked the entire community,” said one of the youths, who requested anonymity. “After thorough investigations, we strongly suspected that this Juju man, Michael Edet Effa, who rented a place in our community for his ritual activities, was responsible for the deaths.”

The youth continued, “When we broke into his shrine, we found names of deceased individuals from our community tied to various charms. We decided to drag him to Itak Junction to face justice, but the police intervened. We will follow up with the police to ensure justice is served.”

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Timfon John stated that the suspect has been taken into custody and is currently detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation and potential prosecution.

ASP John also clarified that the injuries sustained during the incident were not related to the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. “The Command wishes to state that Akwa Ibom State remains peaceful. The incident in question was the arrest of Michael Edet Effa, suspected of being a ritualist. The villagers threw items suspected to be charms out of his rented apartment, and while doing so, discovered names of individuals who had died in the village tied to different charms. The Command acted swiftly to prevent the suspect from being lynched and took him to the CID,” he explained.
