In Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, the second day of peaceful protests took a violent turn as police officers stationed at the Otovwodo area of the East-West road reportedly shot and injured an unidentified protester.
The shooting incident sparked further unrest, leading protesters to set tires on fire and throw sachet water at local government officials.
According to a protester who spoke to Vanguard, the demonstrators were peacefully marching with placards towards the Otovwodo junction when the police blocked their path and began shooting tear gas at them. The protester clarified that they were not carrying any weapons besides placards. As the police were driving away, they allegedly opened fire on the protesters, resulting in one individual being hit in the chest. The injured protester was reportedly rushed to a hospital with the help of other security agents due to the severity of the bullet wound.
A Human Rights Activist, identified as Comrade Silver, recounted the events leading up to the shooting, mentioning that efforts were made to maintain peace during the protest. He highlighted an incident where the police attempted to arrest an individual, leading to a confrontation with market women who threw water and stones at the officers. This situation escalated as the police responded by firing tear gas and live bullets, resulting in the arrest of the individual.
The activist clarified that he did not witness the shooting but was informed by others that the injured person was taken to a hospital by the Army, although the name of the hospital was not specified.
