Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have dismantled a four-man kidnap syndicate, arresting four suspects dressed in military uniforms and rescuing two victims.
During a parade of the suspects, State Commissioner of Police CP Waheed Ayilara pledged to eliminate criminal elements in Akwa Ibom, aiming to make the state safe for visitors, tourists, and investors. Speaking through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, Ayilara detailed the swift response to distress calls that led to the arrests.
“The Command received distress calls about a kidnapping incident at Utang Street by Gibbs Street, Uyo. The Anti-Robbery Squad (ARS) mobilized immediately and apprehended four suspects: Abdulkarem Yusuf, Yusuf Waziri, Inbinabo Iboroma, and Abdulrahman Abbas,” ASP John explained.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had previously kidnapped Abraham Ekpe at Ring Road 3, opposite Cemetery. They were caught attempting to kidnap Ekpe’s friend, Richie, when operatives intervened. The gang had planned to transport the victims to Odukpani LGA in neighboring Cross River State and had demanded a ransom of N5 million from Ekpe, who could not pay, leading them to target his friend as well.
“The victims were successfully rescued and have been reunited with their families,” John stated. Items recovered from the suspects included a red Honda Accord (registration number BJ 615 ABC), a handcuff, a dagger, and other belongings.
CP Ayilara confirmed that the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to making Akwa Ibom uninhabitable for criminals and urged the public to report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods to the police.
