The Police have reported that a total of 10,852 individuals have been arrested and detained nationwide for various crimes over the past three months.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, disclosed this information during a meeting with officers holding the ranks of Commissioner and above. He listed the crimes for which the arrests were made to include kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery.
Egbetokun stated that the arrests and detentions took place between July and September, during which a significant number of arms, ammunition, and vehicles were confiscated.
Additionally, a total of 369 kidnapped victims were rescued during this period.
The IGP highlighted a notable decline in crime rates in key areas such as banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and cybercrime. He also discussed the security preparations for the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State on November 16 and assured that the security forces were well-prepared for the event.
Egbetokun emphasized the need to replicate the successes achieved during the recent election in Edo State, urging officers to carry out their duties diligently and professionally to ensure a secure environment for voters to exercise their democratic rights without fear.
The IGP reiterated the commitment to continued cooperation with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other stakeholders to guarantee the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the election.
He further mentioned that increased patrols and additional security measures would be implemented to safeguard lives and property throughout the ’ember months.
