Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has expressed strong disapproval of the recent outbreak of communal clashes that resulted in significant loss of lives and property in Langtang North and Mikang Local Government Areas. Governor Mutfwang has called on security agencies to take decisive action against the perpetrators and their backers within the confines of the law. He has also urged for immediate mobilization to the affected areas to prevent any further escalation of the conflict.
The clashes stemmed from a dispute over farmland ownership in Ponglong, Lalin District of Mikang, and the nearby Funyallang community in Langtang North. Despite efforts by stakeholders, including security agencies and local government officials, to intervene and prevent further violence, the situation deteriorated, leading to casualties, destruction of food storage facilities, and displacement of residents in several villages in the Lalin District of Mikang.
In a statement released by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang expressed his condolences to the victims and condemned the clashes as unwarranted and unacceptable. He emphasized the importance of peaceful dialogue as the most effective way to resolve conflicts and criticized the resort to violence and arson by individuals targeting innocent communities. Governor Mutfwang called upon traditional, community, and religious leaders, as well as other stakeholders, to engage in dialogue and seek a peaceful resolution to the disputes in order to promote harmonious coexistence among diverse ethnic and religious groups in the state.
