A shortage of petrol has led to the resurfacing of long queues at fuel stations in Ilorin, as the scarcity spreads across Nigeria.
Prices for a liter of petrol have skyrocketed to between N640 and N680 at major marketers’ filling stations, while some independent fuel marketers are selling at even higher prices of N900 to N1,000.
Many filling stations were reported to be closed as they claimed to be out of stock.
A manager of one independent marketer cited the lack of importation or loading of petrol in Lagos, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) being the sole importer of the product. He expressed frustration over the situation and called for the local refineries to be operational to meet the needs of Nigerians.
A TotalEnergies official in Ilorin revealed that they were unable to load fuel in Lagos due to the unavailability of the product. This has caused transport fares to increase in the state capital, affecting commercial cab operators, as well as Okada and tricycle riders, who are grumbling about the situation.
The fuel scarcity and rising prices have not only resulted in long queues and station closures but have also had a ripple effect on transportation costs, impacting residents and businesses in Ilorin.
