Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the federal government to take immediate action in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the murder of 16 youths in Nibo, Anambra State.
According to reports from newsmen , unknown gunmen targeted a group of young men gathered for a social event on Sunday, resulting in the tragic deaths. The Anambra State Police Command described the incident as a “cult-related killing.”
Obi, addressing the situation via his X account on Monday, expressed deep sorrow over the continued violence plaguing the nation. He emphasized the need for justice and the implementation of preventive measures to avert similar incidents in the future. “I am deeply saddened and outraged by the unending killings in our society. The senseless murder of 16 young men in Nibo, Anambra State, is condemnable,” Obi wrote.
Reflecting on the impact of the killings, Obi highlighted the devastating loss faced by the victims’ families and the broader community, noting that this tragic event underscores the growing violence threatening peace and stability across the nation.
He called on Nigerians to unite against this surge in violence, stressing that every life is sacred. “No one has the right to take a life. Such heinous actions show a disturbing disregard for human dignity and the rule of law,” Obi said, warning that unchecked violence could hinder the nation’s progress.
In his message of condolence to the families of the victims and the Nibo community, Obi extended his sympathy, offering prayers for the strength to endure the irreparable loss. “May God grant the departed eternal rest and give their families, the Nibo community, and the Government of Anambra State the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” he added.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, concluded by urging swift action from the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. “Nigeria must be a country where justice and security prevail over lawlessness and violence,” he affirmed.
