Peter Obi Driven by Principle, Not Power — Says Chimamanda Adichie

Lagos, NigeriaAcclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has described Labour Party’s Peter Obi as a leader guided by humility, integrity, and national interest—rather than personal ambition or a desperate pursuit of power.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans programme aired Monday, Adichie praised Obi’s consistency and selflessness, noting that despite the outcome of the 2023 elections and ongoing criticisms, the former Anambra State governor has remained grounded and unchanged in his values.

“He doesn’t need to be president,” Adichie said. “He wants to be because he genuinely cares about Nigeria—but he is not driven by ego or desperation. And that’s a crucial difference.”

The award-winning novelist drew a sharp contrast between Obi and other political figures who she believes seek power for selfish reasons. “There are people who are desperate to become president, not because they have the country at heart, but because they are consumed by their own egos,” she added.

Reflecting on their personal relationship, Adichie described Obi as one of the most sincere and unassuming individuals she has ever known. “The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same today. His values haven’t changed,” she noted.

She further commended Obi’s approach to leadership, emphasizing his belief in public service as a duty—not a favour. “Peter Obi doesn’t expect gratitude for doing his job. He understands that accountability to the people is at the core of leadership,” she said.

Adichie concluded by affirming that her admiration for Obi is deeply rooted in her love for Nigeria, stressing that his principles and conduct continue to inspire hope among many Nigerians.
