Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the killing of Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, a Catholic priest in Anambra State, and called for decisive action to end the nation’s incessant killings.
Rev. Fr. Okonkwo, manager of the College of Nursing Sciences at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, was shot dead by unidentified assailants along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway on Thursday.
Expressing his grief, Obi took to his X account, describing the incident as “heartbreaking” and lamenting the persistent insecurity in Nigeria.
He wrote, “Today, I woke up to the tragic news of the death of Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, the Manager of the College of Nursing Sciences, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala. Fr. Tobias was shot by yet-to-be-identified criminals last night in Ihiala.
“The constant killing of our productive citizens by bloodthirsty elements is deeply heartbreaking. In many parts of the nation, the blood of innocent Nigerians continues to cry out due to unchecked insecurity.
“How many more lives will be wasted before we rise to action and end this menace threatening our future as a nation?”
Obi, a regular visitor and partner of the College of Nursing Sciences, expressed sympathy for the college community, saying, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, the proprietor, management, staff, and students of the College of Nursing Sciences, Ihiala. May God grant him eternal rest and give us the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
Rev. Fr. Okonkwo, born on August 11, 1984, was ordained a Catholic priest on July 11, 2015. His death adds to the growing concerns about insecurity across Nigeria.
