Anambra state,Nigeria–Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, by operatives of a local vigilante group in Anambra State.
In a statement issued via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi described the incident as “inhumane, primitive, and a direct assault on our collective humanity,” expressing deep concern over the treatment of the young corps member.
“As an Anambra indigene, I am not only ashamed but also profoundly heartbroken that such a barbaric act could take place in 2025, in a society that ought to have outgrown such cruelty,” the former Anambra State Governor said.
Obi emphasised that no progressive society should tolerate acts of abuse, humiliation, or dehumanisation, particularly against women and other vulnerable members of the community.
“That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine,” he stated. “What happened is not just a breach of the law and morality—it is a deep wound to our shared humanity.”
Calling for swift justice, Obi urged security agencies and relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible for the attack are apprehended and prosecuted without delay.
“Beyond arrest and prosecution, the perpetrators must be made examples of, to send a strong message that such savagery has no place in our country,” he added.
The former presidential hopeful also called for institutional reforms and community-based safeguards aimed at protecting citizens, particularly youths and women, from abuse and violence.
“Our shared humanity must be our compass. Without it, we risk drifting into a culture of cruelty and impunity,” Obi concluded.
