Veteran Nigerian singer, Wasiu Alabi Odetola, widely known as Pasuma, disclosed the pivotal moment that redirected his career trajectory. Pasuma, who initially pursued a football career, unveiled in a recent interview with Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, that his musical journey was catalyzed by a setback in the form of non-selection for the Nigerian squad in the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship held in China.
The acclaimed fuji musician cited the global impact of Alhaji King Wasiu Ayinde’s 1984 album, ‘Talazo ’84,’ as a profound influence that spurred him to transition to music immediately following the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup opportunity.
Pasuma recounted, “In 1984, Alhaji King Wasiu Ayinde released an album called ‘Talazo ’84.’ The album was ubiquitous; it resonated worldwide. So, I decided to delve into music after being a footballer. I received an invitation to CODAK 85 [1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship], having been among the four players selected from a club in Shogunle.
“Regrettably, I wasn’t chosen for the World Cup, prompting my decision to venture into music. As a professional footballer, that marked the inception of my musical journey, and the rest, as they say, is history today.”
