Passengers Injured as Fully-Loaded BRT Bus Overturns in Lagos

Several passengers sustained injuries early Friday morning when a fully-loaded BRT bus overturned at Iyana-Ipaja in Lagos. The accident occurred as the bus driver swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian.

In a statement released by the Head of Public Affairs for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, the bus, bearing registration number BDG 390 XR, lost control after a hawker with a wheelbarrow suddenly crossed the BRT lane.

According to Okunbor, the bus had departed from the Iyana-Ipaja Terminal and was en route to Obalende when the accident took place.

“At approximately 6:35 am, distress calls were received through the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines, prompting LASEMA to dispatch its Dolphin Response Team from the Igando Base to the scene. Upon arrival, the team discovered that the BRT bus, fully loaded with passengers, had overturned at the specified location,” Okunbor stated.

Investigations revealed that the driver of the BRT bus swerved abruptly to avoid colliding with the pedestrian hawker, causing the vehicle to lose control, mount the road divider, and ultimately topple onto its side.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, although several passengers sustained significant injuries and were transported to an undisclosed hospital before the Dolphin Response Team arrived.

Okunbor further disclosed that the fallen bus was lifted upright and towed to the Moshalashi Police Station near Alimosho Roundabout. The road has since been reopened for vehicular traffic.

“All necessary safety measures were implemented to protect responders and road users during the recovery operation. Primary responders at the scene worked collaboratively to ensure the swift recovery of the bus and the restoration of normal traffic flow on the BRT corridor,” the statement concluded.
