The Pakistani High Commissioner to Nigeria, Retired Maj-Gen. Sohail Khan, has highlighted Pakistan’s significant contribution to global peacekeeping efforts, noting that the country’s armed forces have been the largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1960.
Speaking at the annual Defence and Martyrs Day commemoration in Abuja, Maj-Gen. Khan underscored the bravery of Pakistan’s military in defending the nation against internal and external threats. He noted that the event serves to honor the sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces, with 23,900 officers, including five generals, having lost their lives in the Global War on Terrorism. He further mentioned that Pakistan has endured over $152 billion in losses as a result of the conflict.
The High Commissioner also stressed Pakistan’s status as a responsible nuclear state, praising the military’s command-and-control system, which safeguards the nation’s security.
Col. Mushtag Kamran, Defence Advisor at the High Commission, highlighted the significance of September 6, marking it as a day of unity, resilience, and sacrifice in defense of the homeland. He paid tribute to the fallen members of Pakistan’s military, whose dedication ensured the nation’s freedom and sovereignty, and encouraged current and future generations to follow in their footsteps.
The event was attended by senior officers from the Nigerian Armed Forces, ambassadors, and defense attachés. It featured traditional Pakistani cuisine and concluded with a renewed pledge to honor the sacrifices of martyrs and protect the motherland.
