Akure, Ondo State – Elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a continuing process, calling for visionary leadership, patriotic citizenship, and collective efforts to achieve national progress.
In a Democracy Day message personally signed and released in Akure, Ondo State, Pa Fasoranti emphasized that with the right mindset and leadership, Nigeria can attain greatness. He stressed that democracy in Nigeria, though uninterrupted since 1999, still requires nurturing and improvement.
Reflecting on June 12, Fasoranti said it symbolizes a unified desire among Nigerians for a nation built on equity, justice, and socioeconomic development. “Despite our differences, we all aim for a prosperous Nigeria,” he noted.
He commended the contributions of civil society groups, Afenifere, and other patriotic entities, especially under the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), in restoring democratic governance and birthing the Fourth Republic. According to him, these progressive forces remain vigilant and are instrumental in upholding democratic values.
Fasoranti also urged civil society organisations and progressive-minded citizens to continue working together to strengthen democratic institutions and processes for the good of current and future generations.
On national security, the elder statesman acknowledged ongoing government efforts but noted the persistent threat posed by banditry, particularly in the North. He argued that only the creation of State Police and effective community policing could adequately address the security challenges.
“Afenifere believes that adopting State Police and addressing internal sabotage is critical to curbing insecurity,” Fasoranti said, urging both federal and state governments to take swift action.
He reiterated the call for true federalism, suggesting that regional autonomy as practiced during the First Republic could provide a more stable and united Nigeria.
Concluding his statement, Fasoranti highlighted the significance of June 12, encouraging Nigerians to rise above political, ethnic, and religious differences and unite in the quest for national development.
