Ibadan, Oyo State— The Oyo State Government has officially commenced the distribution of more than five million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) across all 33 local government areas as part of an intensified effort to curb the spread of malaria within the state.
At the flag-off ceremony held at Idi-Ogungun Primary Health Care Centre, Agodi Gate in Ibadan North local government area, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, emphasized that this initiative demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations, particularly pregnant women and children under five years of age.
Dr. Ajetunmobi cautioned residents against misusing the mosquito nets for purposes unrelated to health, such as fishing, gardening, window coverings, or commercial displays. She stressed that such diversion or hoarding of the nets is a punishable offense under the law.
Beneficiaries were urged to use the nets properly. The Commissioner highlighted that the latest generation of ITNs are made from breathable, lightweight materials designed not to retain heat when used in well-ventilated rooms, ensuring comfort and effectiveness.
She appealed specifically to mothers and pregnant women to adopt the daily habit of tucking their children inside the nets each night to prevent malaria, reduce hospital admissions, and ultimately save lives.
A follow-up mop-up exercise will take place after the official distribution period to guarantee that every household receives the nets.
“These nets are not merely commodities; they are life-saving tools. When used consistently and correctly, ITNs provide an effective barrier against malaria, one of the deadliest diseases affecting our people,” said Dr. Ajetunmobi.
She also warned that anyone caught hoarding, selling, or using the nets for purposes other than malaria prevention will face legal consequences.
The distribution program runs from August 1 to 7, 2025, and is being carried out through fixed-point delivery sites. To ensure transparency, accountability, and full coverage, electronic tracking systems have been deployed throughout the process.
