Oyo government shuts collapsed restaurant site

Oyo state, Nigeria:The Oyo State Government has sealed off a collapsed building under construction belonging to a well-known restaurant chain in Dugbe, Ibadan, following a rainstorm that struck the city on Sunday night.

Williams Akin-Funmilayo, Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, confirmed the action during an inspection of the site on Monday. He explained that the government acted swiftly to prevent further casualties, protect lives and property, and facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the collapse.

“Preliminary assessments indicate that substandard and low-quality materials were used in the building’s construction,” the commissioner stated. He also noted that structural integrity tests will be carried out on the collapsed building as well as other branches of the restaurant across the state.

Akin-Funmilayo added that the findings from these tests will inform the government’s subsequent measures, which could include additional sanctions or closures if necessary.

This collapse follows a similar tragedy in October 2024 in the Olunloyo area of Ibadan, where ten people lost their lives in a building collapse.

Reaffirming its dedication to enforcing building safety standards, the state government cautioned developers against compromising public safety through the use of inferior materials or poor construction practices.
