Oyo state, Nigeria–The Oyo State Government has advised applicants for the honorary title of Justice of the Peace (JP) to maintain impartiality in community dispute resolution and refrain from meddling in criminal matters outside their legal purview.
This advisory was issued by the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ayodeji Aikomo, during the screening exercise for over 300 JP applicants held at the Ministry of Justice Conference Room, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the two-day screening aimed to ensure that only individuals of integrity and proven character are selected to serve as Justices of the Peace.
Aikomo emphasized that the JP role is not a status symbol, but a responsibility requiring fairness, discretion, and moral leadership. “Uphold integrity, act without bias, maintain confidentiality, and serve with fairness. Do not take sides in disputes, do not exploit the position for personal gain, and do not interfere in criminal cases beyond your jurisdiction,” he warned.
He further outlined the responsibilities of JPs, noting that they are expected to promote peace and order in their communities, mediate minor civil disputes, and support legal documentation by witnessing affidavits and other formal instruments.
In her welcome address, Director of the Citizens Mediation Centre, Mrs. Adeola Adeleke, urged the applicants to study the JP manuals to better understand the scope and limitations of the role. Similarly, the Director of Administration and Supplies, Mrs. Fatimo Yusuf, reiterated that the JP title is fundamentally about fostering peace, harmony, and justice rooted in truth.
The screening panel, composed of senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and other relevant agencies, assessed candidates based on their integrity, record of community service, and understanding of the JP mandate.
The exercise underscores the state government’s commitment to enhancing access to justice at the grassroots level and promoting effective, community-based conflict resolution. Successful applicants will be formally conferred with the honorary title after completing the screening and vetting process.
