Oxfam and FG Collaborate to Enhance Workplace Gender Policy

Oxfam Nigeria, in partnership with the Federal Government, has introduced new initiatives to strengthen the Nigeria Workplace Gender Policy. This was announced by Oxfam Nigeria’s Country Director, John Makina, during the National Workplace Gender Policy Training of Trainers Workshop held in Abuja.

Makina highlighted that the workshop, co-hosted by the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Ministry of Women Affairs, aims to create a more gender-responsive and equitable working environment throughout the country. The training is designed to promote fair treatment and equal opportunities for all employees, regardless of gender.

He further emphasized the crucial role of the Ministry of Labour and Employment in setting workplace standards and noted that the workshop would equip participants with the necessary skills to implement the Nigeria Workplace Gender Policy effectively.

“It is my hope that by the end of this training, the objectives will have been achieved,” said Mr. Makina. “I encourage everyone to actively participate, exchange ideas, and make the most of the shared expertise present.”

He added that the training would help address issues such as the gender pay gap, workplace inclusion, and the creation of safe, diversified environments, leading to personal and collective progress and a culture of gender responsiveness.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and ensuring more inclusive workplaces across Nigeria. She stressed that the Nigeria Workplace Gender Policy is central to achieving equality and should be continuously implemented and monitored to protect workers from discrimination.

Mrs. Fringe Bulus, Director of Women Development at the Ministry of Women Affairs, reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to fostering gender-responsive work environments. She emphasized the ministry’s efforts to address gender issues by establishing gender desks across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
