Osogbo, Nigeria — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun State chapter, has ordered local government workers to withdraw their services starting Monday, February 17, 2025, citing concerns over potential violence.
The directive comes in response to reports that political appointees from the administration of Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola plan to resume office, a move that has sparked tensions across the state.
Speaking to journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, Chairman of the Osun NLC, emphasized the union’s responsibility to protect its members from possible harm.
“The NLC has observed increasing political tension, causing anxiety among our members working in the local government areas. While we remain apolitical, we cannot allow our members to work in an environment of insecurity,” Arapasopo stated.
The union reiterated its stance on the rule of law, urging all political stakeholders to act within legal boundaries to prevent unrest.
“To safeguard our members, we are directing all local government workers in Osun State to suspend their services effective 12 a.m. on Monday, February 17, 2025. They will only return when their safety at work is fully guaranteed,” the statement read.
The NLC also called on security agencies to ensure public safety and the protection of lives and property across Osun State.
Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene by calling Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, to order over his alleged role in the escalating political crisis.
