Osogbo, Nigeria — Violence erupted across Osun State on Monday as political clashes over local government leadership led to the deaths of five individuals, including a former council chairman.
The crisis followed attempts by opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) functionaries to reclaim council secretariats after a recent Court of Appeal ruling. Among the deceased was Remi Abass, former chairman of Irewole Local Government, Ikire.
Osun State Commissioner for Protocols and Governmental Affairs, Soji Ajeigbe, confirmed that Damilare Oloyede and Taye, both members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were allegedly killed by suspected APC operatives in Iragbiji and Boripe Local Government Areas.
Addressing the press in Osogbo, APC chieftain Alhaji Jamiu Olawumi accused PDP members of killing three APC supporters, including Abass, an unidentified councilor from Olaoluwa Local Government, and another party member from Isokan Local Government.
Olawumi asserted that at least 15 reinstated APC council chairmen took office by 9 a.m., followed by others shortly after, but were later forcefully removed by suspected PDP-aligned hoodlums. He maintained that all reinstated officials would continue performing their duties in line with the February 10 Court of Appeal ruling.
The situation escalated into widespread violence across multiple local governments as both parties clashed over differing interpretations of the court’s verdict. While APC insists the ruling reinstated its elected officials, the PDP refutes this claim, arguing that no such directive was issued.
