Osogbo, Nigeria — Doctors at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital (UTH), Osogbo, have embarked on an indefinite strike following the brutal assault of a resident doctor by a patient’s relative.
The decision was announced today by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in response to an attack on one of their colleagues at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred in the early hours of the day when a female emergency patient (name withheld) was rushed to the unit for urgent medical attention. Despite the doctor’s efforts, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other life-saving measures, the patient could not be revived.
Tensions escalated when a relative of the deceased allegedly assaulted the attending doctor upon hearing the unfortunate news. The doctor sustained severe injuries, including a dislocated neck, and is currently receiving medical care.
Condemning the attack, the ARD leadership declared an immediate and indefinite strike, insisting that justice must be served before normal operations resume.
“We cannot continue working under conditions where our safety is not guaranteed,” an ARD representative stated. “Until the assailant is arrested and charged, we will not return to duty.”
The incident was promptly reported to the police, and investigations are already underway. Authorities have assured the public that the suspect will be held accountable.
Meanwhile, the ARD has reiterated its commitment to protecting healthcare professionals from violence and ensuring that medical personnel can perform their duties without fear of attack.
The statement concluded with a firm resolve by the ARD to pursue legal action and prevent future assaults on healthcare workers.
