Osogbo, Nigeria —  The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has dismissed the departure of the Omoluabi Progressives, led by former governor Rauf Aregbesola, as inconsequential, describing it as “good riddance to bad rubbish.

This position was outlined in a statement issued on Monday by the APC’s Director of Media and Information, Mr. Kola Olabisi, who emphasized that the group’s exit merely formalized a split that had been in effect for years.

According to the statement, the faction had distanced itself from the party since 2022. “Their official declaration changes nothing. It is simply a confirmation of their estranged position within the APC,” Mr. Olabisi stated.

APC’s Response to the Exit

The party accused the Omoluabi Progressives of undermining its interests, particularly during the 2022 governorship election. It labeled the group’s activities as acts of betrayal, asserting that many of its leaders had already been expelled or suspended for disloyalty.

“These individuals have acted as political saboteurs and agents of the ruling PDP,” the statement read. “Their departure is not a loss but a relief, as it removes distractions from genuine party loyalists.”

The APC described the group’s attempt to form or align with another political platform as “the beginning of their political decline,” predicting their downfall in the 2026 elections.

Why the Omoluabi Progressives Left

The Omoluabi Progressives, through their Publicity and Organising Secretary, Ms. Abosede Oluwaseun, announced their exit on Sunday after a stakeholders’ meeting in Ilesa. The group cited marginalization, unresolved party crises, and the unfair expulsion of their leaders as reasons for their decision.

The faction also attributed the APC’s poor performance in the 2022 governorship poll to internal mismanagement and expressed a commitment to seeking a new political path that aligns with their principles ahead of 2026.

Aregbesola’s Position

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola praised his supporters for their dedication to integrity and progress. He urged them to stay united in their mission to advance Osun State’s prosperity through responsible leadership.

“This new journey is about restoring hope and achieving greatness for our state. Let us remain focused and committed,” Aregbesola remarked.

Future Aspirations

The Chairperson of the Omoluabi Progressives, Mr. Azeez Adesiji, reiterated the group’s dedication to progressive values, promising to reorient its members toward genuine leadership ideals.

The group expressed optimism about its political future, signaling a renewed commitment to reshaping Osun State’s political landscape as it prepares for the 2026 governorship race.
