Osogbo, Nigeria — The Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mutiu Agboke, has urged political stakeholders to reject vote buying and violence in the lead-up to the 2026 elections, emphasizing their dangers to Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking at a two-day political stakeholders’ workshop organized by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Osun State chapter, Agboke warned against undemocratic practices and called for increased political education to curb the menace.
He stressed that structured education and enlightenment programs could help deter individuals engaged in vote buying.
“Party leaders must educate their followers on the dangers of vote buying and its consequences. This issue did not emerge in isolation; it was introduced into the system by stakeholders themselves,” Agboke stated.
He emphasized that violence remains a significant obstacle to free and fair elections in Nigeria and urged political actors to promote peaceful electoral processes.
“Violence is a major challenge to credible elections. Stakeholders must understand their role in fostering a peaceful environment that encourages voting rather than coercion,” he added.
IPAC Chairman Victor Akande assured that discussions from the workshop, themed “Our Democracy: The Way Forward,” would help mitigate vote buying and violence, strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
