One Dead, Five Injured as Car Plows Into Crowd in Northern France

Evreux, FranceA night out in the Normandy town of Evreux turned tragic early Saturday when a man deliberately drove his car into a crowd gathered outside a wine bar, killing one person and injuring five others, two critically.

The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. local time following an altercation inside the bar. Evreux public prosecutor Remi Coutin confirmed that investigations for homicide and attempted homicide are underway, but ruled out any terrorist or racist motives.

“Unfortunately, the toll is very heavy,” Coutin said, adding that the fatality occurred at the scene while five others were hurt, with two in critical condition.

The violence started after a dispute between a young woman and several men inside the establishment. Security personnel intervened and escorted patrons outside, but the confrontation escalated.

“One individual retrieved a vehicle and intentionally reversed at high speed into the crowd outside,” Coutin explained. “The incident escalated and ended tragically.”

Authorities have taken into custody two individuals, including the suspected driver and a woman, with more arrests expected as the investigation continues.

Mayor Guy Lefrand of Evreux expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families. “I extend my heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to those affected,” he said, praising the swift response of police and emergency services.

A police source described the scene as chaotic, with many panicked onlookers, some under the influence of alcohol.

Mayor Lefrand also pointed out that the wine bar should have closed by 1:00 a.m., raising questions about why it remained open.

Evreux, with a population of approximately 50,000, is reeling from what officials have called one of its most violent incidents in recent memory.
