An unidentified man was shot in the thigh during a violent police operation in Nairobi, as human rights groups report that over 200 individuals were injured and more than 100 arrested during nationwide protests against proposed government tax increases.
Amnesty International stated that at least 105 protesters were detained amid a forceful police crackdown involving tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets. The organization called on the National Police Service to refrain from excessive force, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests of citizens.
Protesters are urging lawmakers to reject the proposed legislation, arguing that it would disproportionately burden salaried workers, entrepreneurs, and consumers. They accuse President William Ruto’s administration of reneging on promises to reduce taxes and lower the cost of living.
The proposed tax increases include a 2.75% levy on income for the national medical insurance plan and higher taxes on vegetable oil and fuel, which would raise production costs and subsequently impact consumers.
The protests, aimed at opposing budget proposals intended to generate $2.7 billion in additional taxes, have spread to 19 of Kenya’s 47 counties. Demonstrators argue that the proposed amendments are insufficient and demand that legislators completely reject the budget legislation. The finance bill has passed its second reading in Parliament, with a third and final reading scheduled for next week.
