The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a total of 55,859 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been collected by new registrants and individuals applying for card transfers or replacements in the last five days.
This development was disclosed by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement issued on Tuesday. According to Olumekun, the 55,859 collected cards represent 62.2 percent of the 89,777 available for collection in Ondo State.
He further highlighted that this is the highest percentage of PVCs collected within a five-day period in the state since INEC introduced the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) system in 2015.
Olumekun stated that the collection exercise would continue across the 18 local government areas (LGAs) of Ondo State. Starting from Wednesday, October 23, through Tuesday, October 29, 2024, registered voters will be able to collect their PVCs at INEC offices from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, including weekends.
“A detailed breakdown of the collection figures by Local Government Areas has been made available on our official website and social media platforms for public access,” Olumekun said.
He emphasized that the collection process would proceed at the INEC offices in all 18 LGAs, and encouraged those who have not yet picked up their cards to do so promptly. “The Commission reiterates its policy that no PVCs will be collected by proxy. Voters must appear in person to collect their cards,” he added.
INEC appealed to the remaining voters, urging them to visit their respective LGA offices to collect their PVCs ahead of the upcoming governorship election. The electoral body assured the public that the process remains transparent, and that voters’ participation in the electoral process is vital to the success of the upcoming polls.
The continuous PVC collection exercise is crucial for the Ondo State governorship election, as voters who do not collect their cards will be unable to participate in the voting process. With the election date drawing closer, INEC is intensifying efforts to ensure as many registered voters as possible are equipped with their PVCs, thereby promoting wider electoral participation across the state.
This update underscores INEC’s commitment to enhancing voter accessibility and ensuring that no eligible voter is disenfranchised. The Commission has been actively pushing for the timely collection of PVCs in preparation for a smooth and credible election in the state.
