Lagos, Nigeria — Nigerian rap icon, Olamide Gbenga Adedeji, widely known as Olamide, has made history by becoming the first African rapper to amass over 1 billion career streams on Spotify.
This groundbreaking achievement reflects Olamide’s unique ability to blend Afrobeats with his rap style, alongside a series of successful collaborations.
In addition to this milestone, Olamide garnered global attention last year as the first African rapper to earn a Grammy nomination. His hit collaboration with Asake, ‘Amapiano’, was nominated in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category. Although the award ultimately went to Tyla’s ‘Water’, the nomination cemented Olamide’s legacy as a trailblazer in African music.
Notably, in November 2024, Nigerian singer Crown Uzama, popularly known as Shallipopi, hailed Olamide as the “king of Nigerian street music.” During an interview with Naija FM, Shallipopi expressed his admiration for the rap legend, stating, “Baddo is the father and king of Nigerian street music. So I had to feature him on ‘Order’ because it is a street song, and Olamide owns the street.”
Olamide’s influence extends beyond individual accolades. His contributions to the elevation of street pop have transformed it into a celebrated music genre with mainstream recognition. He has delivered standout collaborations, including ‘Wahala’ with CKay, ‘Wise 2.0’ with Rybeena, and ‘Vibes on Vibes’ with Liya.
This historic achievement underscores Olamide’s enduring impact on the global music landscape and his role as a cultural ambassador for African rap and street pop.
