Ogori, Kogi State — In a vibrant display of cultural heritage and moral discipline, 103 young maidens in Ogori-Magongo LGA were formally initiated into womanhood during the 2025 edition of the revered Ovia Osese festival.
Held on Saturday, May 4, 2025, the festival marked a significant rite of passage for young girls in the Ogori community. The annual event emphasizes chastity, character, and readiness for marital life, reflecting the community’s enduring values and traditions.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Aiso Gabriel Osiwomequin, National President of the Ogori Descendants Union (ODU), described the Ovia Osese as a powerful expression of cultural pride and generational continuity.
“This festival is more than tradition — it is a declaration of identity and unity,” Dr. Osiwomequin said. “It connects us to our roots and reminds us of the strength we possess as a collective.”
He lauded both natives and associates of Ogori — within and beyond Nigeria — for their contributions toward the town’s development. From infrastructure and healthcare to youth empowerment and cultural preservation, their efforts were praised as pillars of community progress.
Dr. Osiwomequin also paid tribute to the elders for preserving values, the women for their resilience, the youth for their passion, and all stakeholders for nurturing peace and pride in Ogori.
In his remarks, Comrade Michael Oloruntoba, Chairman of ODU’s Education and Culture Committee, described the event as a deeply symbolic recognition of the journey into womanhood based on Ogori’s cultural ethos.
He applauded the mothers whose guidance and vigilance have kept their daughters morally upright in a challenging modern world.
“It’s no small feat raising morally disciplined girls in today’s society,” Oloruntoba stated. “This celebration is as much about them as it is about their daughters.”
The Ovia Osese festival continues to stand as a cultural beacon of identity, discipline, and unity for the Ogori people — a celebration of womanhood deeply rooted in tradition and pride.
