OFFICIAL: Semi Ajayi Signs Two-Year Deal With Hull City

Hull, EnglandNigerian international defender Semi Ajayi has officially joined EFL Championship side Hull City on a two-year contract, marking a significant addition to the Tigers’ defensive line ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The 31-year-old centre-back sealed the move after a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion, bringing with him a wealth of experience and over 200 Championship appearances. Hull City confirmed the deal in a club statement, adding that the agreement includes an option to extend the contract by a further year.

Ajayi, who can also operate as a defensive midfielder, will officially link up with the squad on July 1. His arrival is seen as a strategic reinforcement as the Tigers aim to mount a serious challenge in the upcoming campaign.

The towering 6’4” defender left an indelible mark at West Brom, where he made 177 appearances and scored 13 goals. A key figure during their promotion-winning 2019/20 campaign, Ajayi featured prominently in the Premier League the following season and played an instrumental role in guiding the Baggies to the Championship play-offs in 2023/24.

Prior to his stint at The Hawthorns, Ajayi made a name for himself at Rotherham United, scoring 15 times in 108 appearances and playing a central role in their 2017/18 promotion via the League One play-offs. His earlier career saw him rise through the ranks at Charlton Athletic and Arsenal, before gaining valuable experience across the English football pyramid with clubs such as Crewe Alexandra, AFC Wimbledon, and Dartford.

Internationally, Ajayi has earned 43 caps for Nigeria. He played every minute of the Super Eagles’ run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final and was recently part of the squad that lifted the 2025 Unity Cup, with victories over Ghana and Jamaica. He also featured in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Russia in a June 6 friendly in Moscow.

Speaking on his move, Ajayi expressed his excitement about the new challenge:

“I’m really excited. When I spoke with the sporting director and head of recruitment, their vision really impressed me. The club wants to compete at the top of the table, and that aligns perfectly with my ambition.”

He continued:

“I bring Championship experience, leadership, and a bit of pace to the backline. I had a great six years at West Brom, but now I’m hungry for something new. I’m ready to give my best in a Hull City shirt.”

Although sidelined for a portion of last season due to injury, Ajayi is now fully fit and poised to bring veteran steel and composure to Hull’s backline as they aim for promotion.
