Several election observer groups monitoring the Edo State governorship election have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to use its authority under Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022 to review any poll results that were declared under questionable circumstances or violated electoral regulations.
In a joint statement issued by groups including the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, Yiaga Africa, Kimpact Development Initiative, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, ElectHER, and TAF Africa, concerns were raised over the transparency of the result collation process. They cited reports of disruptions at collation centres, intimidation of electoral officials, and attempts to manipulate results contrary to the Electoral Act and INEC’s own guidelines.
The groups urged INEC to investigate reports of result mutilation and to address any irregularities. They also called on security agencies to remain impartial and refrain from interfering in the collation process, stressing the need to grant full access to party agents, the media, and election observers at the collation centres.
Their statement underscored the critical role of security forces in maintaining order without compromising the transparency and credibility of the election results.
“We urge INEC to exercise its powers under Section 65 to review any results that were not declared voluntarily or that violated the provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines,” the statement read, adding that the protection of the integrity of the process is essential to ensure a credible outcome.
