The Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, recently made private visits to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido at their Abuja residences. The specifics of their discussions have not been disclosed.
Atiku confirmed Obi’s visit on his Twitter account, expressing pleasure in hosting him. It is noteworthy that Obi served as Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election. Atiku also posted photos of their meeting and mentioned that hosting Obi was an honor.
Paul Ibe, Atiku’s spokesperson, revealed in an interview that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, played a crucial role in Peter Obi’s departure from the PDP.
Ibe also stated that Atiku was willing to zone the PDP presidential ticket to the Southeast. During an appearance on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On podcast, Ibe mentioned that Atiku did not push Obi out of the party, but rather, Wike’s support for southern zoning influenced Obi’s decision to leave. Wike believed that the south, not specifically the southeast, would be in the best position to secure the presidential ticket.
