Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate Peter Obi has appealed for calm after the party’s headquarters was invaded by the National Transition Committee. This committee, led by former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Abdulwaheed Omar, took action on Tuesday following the annulment of the re-election of LP National Chairman Julius Abure and the National Working Committee (NWC) by the congress two months ago.
The committee, which includes co-chairmen Prof. Sam Amadi and Abiodun Olamosu, and Secretary Nnawuihe Nwauwa, has established 13 sub-committees to oversee the administration of the Labour Party. Omar, along with committee members and numerous NLC supporters, staged a protest at the LP headquarters in Abuja, demanding Abure’s resignation.
In response to the protest, Obi addressed the demonstrators, emphasizing the importance of unity within the party. He downplayed the internal conflicts, stating, “My first three assignments are reconciliation, reconciliation, and reconciliation. This is what I do every day, even in our families. When we quarrel with our wives and children, we reconcile.”
Obi further assured that all party members, including the demonstrators, are part of the family and must be reconciled. He expressed his readiness for a reconciliation meeting, emphasizing that the future of the party would be decided collectively. “I am ready for a reconciliation meeting any day you choose, Mr. Chairman,” Obi stated.
Omar, speaking to journalists earlier, explained that their presence was to enforce the takeover of the national headquarters of the party as mandated. “Today marks the beginning of the takeover and total control of the regional, state, LGA, and ward secretariats of the Labour Party all over Nigeria,” he declared. Omar stressed that the era of unethical practices such as selling nomination forms to the highest bidder, forgery of party documents, embezzlement of party funds, and collusion with opposing political parties is over.
