Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has made a significant announcement by increasing the minimum wage for civil servants to N70,000. This decision was disclosed by the governor during the inauguration of the Labour House in the state. Governor Obaseki also declared that the Labour House will be named after Adams Oshiomhole, the former governor of the state and current Senator representing Edo North.
The implementation of the new minimum wage in Edo State is scheduled to commence from May 1, 2024. This move comes in response to the persistent advocacy by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an improved minimum wage for workers across various states. The economic challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly exacerbated by recent policy shifts like the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of forex windows, have underscored the urgent need for better remuneration to alleviate the hardship experienced by many.
While the national minimum wage has been set at N30,000 since April 18, 2019, it has been widely criticized as insufficient given the prevailing economic conditions. This increase by Governor Obaseki reflects a proactive approach to addressing the economic realities faced by civil servants in Edo State. Stay tuned for further details on the specifics of the new minimum wage policy as announced by Governor Obaseki.
